What to Do During a Plumbing Emergency (Before the Plumber Arrives)

A burst pipe, overflowing toilet, or major leak can cause serious damage to your home in a matter of minutes. Knowing what to do in those critical first moments, before your emergency plumber arrives, can save you thousands of dollars in repairs and prevent lasting damage.

Step 1: Shut Off the Water

This is the most important thing you can do. If the problem is isolated to one fixture (like a toilet or sink), look for the local shut-off valve, usually a small knob or lever on the wall or floor near the fixture. Turn it clockwise to shut off the water supply.

If you can’t find the local valve, or if the leak is coming from a pipe in the wall or ceiling, go to your main water shut-off valve. In most California homes, this is located near the front of the house where the water line enters, or near the water meter at the street. Every household member should know where this valve is before an emergency happens.

Step 2: Turn Off the Water Heater

If you’ve shut off the main water supply, turn off your water heater to prevent damage to the unit. An empty tank that continues to heat can overheat and crack. For gas water heaters, turn the gas valve to the “off” position. For electric units, switch off the breaker at your electrical panel.

Step 3: Contain the Water

Use towels, buckets, and mops to contain as much water as possible. If water is dripping from the ceiling, place a bucket underneath and poke a small hole in the bulging area to let the water drain in a controlled way. Otherwise the ceiling may collapse.

Step 4: Document the Damage

Take photos and videos of the damage for your insurance company. Document the source of the leak if visible, the affected areas, and any damaged belongings. This documentation will be valuable when filing a claim.

Step 5: Call an Emergency Plumber

  • Don’t ignore a small leak. Small leaks become big leaks. A dripping pipe in the wall can cause mold growth, structural damage, and much costlier repairs down the road. Schedule a leak detection service if you suspect hidden moisture.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances near standing water. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Avoid using any electrical devices in flooded areas.
  • Don’t try to fix major plumbing yourself. While shutting off water and containing damage is important, attempting DIY repairs on burst pipes or sewer backups can make the problem worse.
